ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: KURIOUS JORGE

Kurious Jorge an Underground Hip Hop MC from New York.Kurious Jorge is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, and grew up in Spanish Harlem. He debuted in 1991 on Powerule's "Young Stars from Nowhere". He then appeared on Pete Nice and DJ Richie Rich's album Dust to Dust. The duo helped Kurious get a record deal with Columbia Records via Bobbito and Pete Nice's Hoppoh imprint. In 1992, he released his first single, "Walk Like a Duck". In 1994, Kurious released his debut album A Constipated Monkey, which featured the hit singles "I'm Kurious" and "Uptown Shit". Despite the success of the singles, the album was not commercially successful.
Shortly after the album's release, Kurious seemingly disappeared from the music scene. In 1999, he reemerged on MF DOOM's album Operation: Doomsday on the track "?" and contributed a track to a Monsta Island Czars Mixtape, under the alias Biollante.
Amalgam Digital reissued A Constipated Monkey with bonus tracks in 2007.
In June 25th, 2009 will be the release of the long awaited official sophomore album from this underground NYC legend. "II" features appearances from fellow underground heroes MF DOOM, Max B and a special reunion with the legendary MC Serch. The album also features boom bap production from VIC and Platinum selling producer Dame Grease.

This is the Official Video of Mos Def's The Ecstatic(album). Casa Bey!!!! Enjoy!!!
Freestyle Friday

This is to showcase true freestyles, a lot of rappers spit written verses and call them freestyles, and sometimes they have a hype man finishing their rhymes. Free styling can be done in a battle form, a cipher, or just spitting about anything, just as long as it's not pre-written or stolen. A true freestyle has mistakes, and is can focus on things that are in the MC's current environment check out this video of Common and you'll understand what a true freestyle is.

Dead Prez "The Pulse of the People"

The duo Dead Prez is comprised of stic.man and M-1, the two met in Tallahassee, Fl while attending college at FAMU. Dead Prez is known for having more politically conscious lyrics, they also touch on topics such as police brutality, African unity, capitalism, and revolution just to name a few. Dead Prez made their debut on 2000 with their album "Lets Get Free" which featured the upbeat song "Hip Hop". They have released 2 albums since then and are supposed to release 2 albums in 2009. There is no word on when "Information Age" will drop but listeners can anticipate the album with DJ Green Lantern titled "Pulse of the People"(Turn Off The Radio Vol.3) to drop June 29th, 2009. For those of you who have never heard Dead Prez check out this unofficial video.

Creators!!
Basement Metaphors is a blog spot that was created by Luis, and Steven. The two meet at Broward College in a computer class. Their love of Hip Hop and music in general lead them to create an outlet for the Real and Underground Hip Hop movement. What they hope to accomplish through Basement Metaphors is a place for other people who are passionate about Hip Hop can come and discuss topics, share ideas and express themselves through Hip Hop.

Luis “Fino” Alvarez was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico and grew up in Caguas, Puerto Rico. While in Puerto Rico, Luis was influenced by the local rap scene. Puerto Rico being a Mecca for Latino Hip Hop and has a very strong underground hip hop scene. Luis moved to the U.S. at the age of 12 and it was easy for him to distinguish between the mainstream and real MC’s that the U.S. had to offer. Staying true to his roots Luis still listens to MC’s that rap in Spanish as well as English.

Steven “Villain” Pierre-Louis was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti but unfortunately after political violence broke out his parents moved to Florida while he was 2. Steven was put on to rap by his older brother who at the time was listening to albums such as Illmatic, Enter the 36 Chambers, etc.. As Steven got older he was surprised to see how big of a rap scene Haiti has and enjoys listening to Creole Hip Hop and French Hip Hop as well as in English.
