Local Artists : Dylan Golden & Keilah Rose

This duo , situated in Miami, brings a very eclectic sound to SoFlo. The first verse which is by Dylan Golden takes a very lyrical introspective approach from the MC, it grabs your attention throughout. The chorus follows and we're introduced to the angelic but powerful voice of Keilah Rose, and after to our surprise she is an extremely lyrical rapper as well, as she delivers an unforgettable verse, very talented we must say. The last verse is by Dylan Golden as again he makes you want to analyze each word as he paints a picture of mixed emotions. The video is extremely in tune with the theme of the song , the setting and colors couldn't have been chosen better. The instrumental I believe is from Nujabes, who's melodic beats include like a feather, eclipse, amongst others. Definitely a great song , we look forward to featuring both artists on Basement Metaphors again very soon. Follow Dylan Golden on twitter @DylanGolden305 and Keilah Rose as well @KeilahRose :) , enjoy the smoothness

Throwback Thursday : Akrobatik

Check out today's throwback song Akrobatik - Remind My Soul

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

New Video by Havoc!

This joint is tough. Just press play.

Islamic Month of Ramadan? Hip Hop?

Islam? Hip Hop? what do the two have to do with each other? Great question.

To answer we go searching through the origins of Hip Hop where the only way to even hear Hip Hop was at your local park with only your local MC's in what is called a cipher. We've heard rappers like AZ say " Knowledge it completes the cipher.." and NaS with "..Cause only knowledge makes a cipher complete.." What is a cipher? According to Oxfords English Dictionary's first definition
noun
1a secret or disguised way of writing; a code:
he wrote cryptic notes in a cipher
[mass noun]:
the information may be given in cipher.

numerically speaking cipher came from the Frech word chiffre which means number or 0 which both originate from the Arabic word for zero which is á¹£ifr = zero. This is why ciphers are done in circles to represnet the number 0. The number 0 in earlier times represented infinity until the sideways figuire 8 replaced it. The circle shape of rhyming in a cipher represents infinite knowledge being given as Nas said "..Knowledge makes a cipher complete..". Although most rappers are not orthodox Sunni or Shi'te which technically does not make them Muslims, they have found Islamic teachings in 5% Percent teachings , Nation of God's and Earths , and The NOI. Many rappers in the late 80's and early 90's came from those branches. Such as Rakim, Capone-n-Noreaga, Tribe Called Quest, Tragedy Khadafi, Nas, AZ, Ice Cube, amongst others.Check out some of these lyrics.

"A lot of rules, some locked in solitude
Curse the day of they birth confused, who's to be praised?
The mighty dollar -- or almighty Allah" -Nas

"Might act up, but I still can pass dawa
I'm usin' new ways to try to reach these better days
Instead of tryin' to take you under I just make you wonder
I still fast, make salaat, and pay zakat
I didn't make Hajj yet, but that's my next project
Livin' two lives, one of turn and one with true lies
Keeping up hope knowing he's answering to my du'as." -The Roots

" But I praise the Lord of the world that's unseen,
respect me for that and let me do my thing.." - Q-Tip

"i'm headstrong, at peace with myself like Islam" -Prodigy

" it's 1 O-clock, making salaat, I catch Jumua'ah
lay down my towel, slide off my suede Pumas" -Tragedy Khadafi

"are you talkin' to me
I can't hear you with a mouth full of pig's feet
Thy shouldn't eat swine flesh.." -Ice Cube

"Much more than bowties and bean pies
Kickin' knowledge at 7-11
And they won't call me a nigga when I get to heaven" -Ice Cube

"What you know about, how God comes first in our lives
everything we do is for Allah" -Akon

" See Allah's got me back on my deen you cant
break me" -Stalley

Again, I repeat, technically most of these rappers are not Muslims regardless of them calling themselves so because they contradict the teachings of the Qu'ran. Loon, Napolean and Freeway, Akon are 4 which follow orthodox Islam, although 1 of them deviates. Check these videos.

Lyrical Breakdown : Prodigy

On this track listen to poetry in motion as a 17 year old Prodigy describes the life of a thief. This track "If it's Alright" was off Mobb Deep's demo tape. Wow the days of demo tapes. Prodigy's verse begins at 3:20

It's alright with me if its alright with you
Big P representin' from the Queensbridge crew...

Don't ask why its just like that
I was brought up to live the wrong way
At night to God I pray
Will He let me breath another 24 hours of air
I really don't deserve it but really I don't care
From what I see. Whatever is, is meant to be
So until I drop, it's the crime life for me
Some might say I need help 'cuz the way I'm livin' is sick
I reply "mind your own before you be another vict"
Many years of corrupt shit, what will I end up with?
Nothing but a pocket full of memories of foul shit committed as a younsta
Grand larcenist slash petty theif, yo Ima make things brief
In my early years I was livin' fouler than most
Smile all up in your face, take your money, get ghost
It aint right, and I might regret it later that night
While I'll be laying in my bed holdin' my thoughts tight
Waking up early in the wee hours
do my thing correct so it don't lead to the penile
Cause fuck that shit,
I'd rather roam the streets freely planning pockets to get
Send you home hurt, crying broke, feeling upset
Don't take it personal I'm only trying to live
Tonight we're taking donations, so what you got to give?
The dirt underneath my fingernails got a story to tell of their own
All things are shown, aint nothing to hide
I speak the raw truth, uncooked
rewind my whole verse if there's anything you overlooked
'Cause I don't got time for your bullshit talk
It's niggas gettin' murdered in the streets of New York
So at the same time, I'm outside taking mine
Or taking yours 'til I hit the figures out the poor.

Throwback Thursday : Camp Lo

This group Camp Lo released arguably one of the best hip hop albums but was heavily slept on in 1997. The album titled " Uptown Saturday Night " has a jazzy sound that brings you into the 70's New York funk era. Almost like a Bronx, NY Outkast feel but with even more funk. Their videos are made to look older than the time they were actually released to coincide with their musical styles. We hope you enjoy today's Throwback Thursday.

DMX invades Fort Lauderdale

Friday July 6th, DMX will perform his new album "The Weigh In" in full, at Club Revolution Live located at 100 SW 3rd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312. International Corner : Paris , France

1995 LE COULOIR ROUGE or THE RED HALLWAY

This clip is from the group 1995 from south Paris, France. 1995 is part of the collective L'Entourage (The Entourage) which has a slew of young rappers that have been taking France by storm. What we see in this clip is basically 3 members of the group aimlessly freestyling specifically Sneazzy West wearing the fedora hat for the joy of it until a representative from a major label knocks on the door (played by Hologramme Lo a 1995 member) with a possible signing deal. They instruct the rep. to follow them into the red hallway where Alpha Wann gives a ferocious freestyle, but true to their nature they refuse to sign a major recording deal. 1995 has turned down several large deals and remain independent. We hope you enjoy these young French MC's

Watch 1995 memeber Alpha Wann show his skills again in this freestyle

Also Check out the larger collective that 1995 also is a part of titled L'Entourage (The Entourage)'s freestyle, Guizmo the 3rd one who raps, is no longer a member of L'entourage unfortunately

Lyrical Breakdown : Kool G Rap

Kool G Rap

Yo When the gats reveal
You cats get peeled and that's the deal
Fuck a bitch-ass that switch fast niggas that lack the real
When the slugs burst
G.Rap be aiming at your mug first
Niggas is blood thirst
We'll see who get plugged worst
We dug earth
Then place you, put the nickel-plated to your facial
Bullets ain't racial kid the only hate you
My nine will seem like it's a time machine, B.C. date you
Jacking you more than ripper
My fifth's an organ shifter
The human organism lifter
You'll be hearing organs
If ya leaving orphans, If ya
Let these fours hit ya where the Lord split ya
A fork pitcher
To bump heads with those that dump lead
Accurate shot in back of your knot
Leave you one dead G.Rap,Havoc and Prodigy
Let's put these bitch niggas where bodies be dun
Yo if it gotta be,it gotta be

A closer look at the genius that is Kool G Rap on the Mobb Deep - Realest track , we see how he makes his choppy rhyming pattern work for him. Most rappers take an AB, AB scheme or rhyming in couplets rhyme scheme and run with it but here we see various inner rhyme patterns. The diversity of hip hop is explored with this flow and helps show a diffent style of rhyming since hip hop is accustomed to the dominating AB, AB style we hope you enjoy it.

Tupac Shakur

We wanted to wish a happy birthday to the late Tupac Shakur. Regardless of your view on Tupac it cannot be denied that he was one of the most important artists to date, not only in Hip Hop. Tupac has sold almost 80 million records making him one of the top selling artists of all time. His music transcends language barriers as we find his fans in all 4 corners of the earth. Born June 16, 1971 into a very revolutionary family, and it was rumored he was of royal African lineage. The depth of Tupac's music is unmatched. To understand anyone is to understand their beginnings, so we chose Papa'z Song from Tupac to demostrate his harsh upbringing so you can better understand one aspect of his life. Please take a moment and listen to an early Tupac speak about his adolescence on "Papa'z Song"

"Manchild in the promiseland , couldnt afford many heroes, moms was the only one there my pops was a no show..." -Tupac Shakur (Papaz Song 1993)
